"Medicaid Enrollment in 50 States: December 2008 Update" a report prepared by HMA's Eileen Ellis and Dennis Roberts for the Kaiser Family Foundation - 2/18/2010
A new data update from the Foundation’s KCMU shows that in December 2008, 44.75 million individuals were enrolled in Medicaid in the 50 states and the District of Columbia—a 4.8% increase from the previous December. This number of enrollees represents an all-time high for Medicaid and reflects the effects of the economic downturn, as many people who lose their jobs and their job-based health insurance turn to public programs for help.
