Episode 1: Benefits of Remote Induction of Buprenorphine

In this episode, Annalisa Baker interviews Scott Haga, Principal at Health Management Associates, experienced medical provider and subject matter expert in the treatment of substance use disorders. He has provided addiction medicine services in the outpatient setting as well as inpatient addiction consultation services.

Behavioral health providers in New York are experiencing a deluge of information around changes in telehealth practices related to the COVID-19 crisis. New Yorkers with substance use disorders (SUD) are likely at increased risk of relapse and overdose during this unusual period of social isolation and chaos, and may be struggling to find treatment supports. Starting buprenorphine via telehealth (e.g., home induction) is a safe and increasingly standard practice for medication assisted treatment (MAT).

In this episode we discuss:

  • How to take advantage of recent changes in telehealth regulations to help clients with SUD initiate MAT at home
  • Ideal candidates for remote induction
  • Tips for helping clients induce remotely
