An HMA report examining the experiences of nine hospitals with comprehensive electronic health record (EHR) systems describes ways that the systems facilitate patient safety, quality improvement, and efficiency.  The EHRs have contributed to faster, more accurate communication and streamlined processes, which improve patient flow, minimize duplicative tests, enable faster responses to patient inquiries, improve capture of charges, and generate federal incentive payments.  The report presents challenges to EHR implementation, ways to alleviate them, and lessons for other hospitals and policymakers.
