Webinar Highlights The Commonwealth Fund Tool Featuring HMA Reports

WhyNotTheBest.org, created by The Commonwealth Fund, will be the focus of a September 24 webinar.

WhyNotTheBest.org gives health care professionals a tool to benchmark their performance over time and against other hospitals and regions. Created by The Commonwealth Fund, the free website brings together performance data from multiple sources to track the delivery of recommended care, readmission and mortality rates, incidence of bloodstream infections, patient safety and quality, use of health information technology, health care costs, and more.

Health Management Associates (HMA) is proud to be a partner in this important work. Since the website’s development, HMA Managing Principals Sharon Silow-Carroll, and Jennifer Edwards, and Senior Consultant Diana Rodin have prepared nearly 40 case studies of high-performing hospitals that are posted on WhyNotTheBest.org. The hospital selections were based primarily on top scores on publicly-available indicators in a variety of areas, including patient experience, low readmissions, central line infection reduction and Accountable Care Organization pioneers. HMA also has prepared summary reports or matrices that assess and synthesize the key factors and strategies that contribute to superior performance. The case studies and reports offer lessons learned, guidance and best practices for hospital leaders.

The September 24 webinar will begin at 2 p.m. ET. The Commonwealth Fund’s Anne-Marie Audet, M.D., M.Sc., and Martha Hostetter will demonstrate WhyNotTheBest.org and moderate the event. Webinar participants will also hear stories from professionals in the field using the tool in their work.

Speakers include:

  • William R. Scharf, M.D., physician change agent, OSF HealthCare
  • James Donohue, senior manager, ECG Management Consultants
  • David G. Schulke, vice president of research, Health Research and Educational Trust, American Hospital Association.
