Jody Gastfriend, LICSW
Jody Gastfriend is a licensed clinical social worker and a national expert in senior care. She has advised professional societies, home care agencies, investors, start-ups and employers.
An expert in family and senior care, long-term care and healthcare management, she has lectured widely to audiences that include human resources professionals, healthcare executives, policymakers and caregiving employees.
Before joining HMA, Jody served as vice president of Senior Care at Care.com, the largest online resource for care in the world, where she established a highly successful employer-supported eldercare program purchased by top-tier corporate clients nationwide.
Her broad range of leadership positions also includes serving as a supervisor at Harvard’s Massachusetts General Hospital, director of Social Services and Case Management at a community hospital, chief operating officer of a Medicare-certified visiting nurse association and director of Adult Care Services at a national backup care company where she launched an expansive eldercare division serving more than 300,000 employees.
Jody has been a featured expert for NBC, Fox News, AARP, Parade magazine and The Wall St Journal and a regular contributor to The Huffington Post and Forbes. She has published numerous articles on caregiving and aging in premiere print and online outlets including Oprah.com, Salon.com, USA Today, Harvard Business Review and Next Avenue.
An award-winning author, Jody’s book My Parent’s Keeper, The Guilt, Grief, Guesswork and Unexpected Gifts of Caregiving, published by Yale University Press, has been described as an essential guide to caring for aging and ailing family members. She shares the personal journey of many family caregivers, having helped manage the care of her own father with dementia for more than a decade.
Jody earned a bachelor’s degree from Tufts University, and her Master of Social Work from Simmons College School of Social Work.
Jody lives with her husband in Newton, Massachusetts and enjoys swimming, sailing and biking at their beach house on Buzzards Bay.
