Van Nguyen is a diligent healthcare professional with experience in medical coding, risk adjustment, data analytics, workflow implementation and claim denials research.

She is an expert at International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM); International Classification of Diseases, Procedure Coding System (ICD-PCS); Current Procedural Terminology (CPT); and Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) coding. Proficient in Hierarchical Condition Category (HCC) coding, Van also possesses a broad understanding of medical terminology, meticulous attention to detail, and strong communication skills.

Before joining HMA, Van was the revenue cycle manager for the Indian Health Center of Santa Clara Valley, where she was responsible for both the medical and behavioral health revenue cycles at all center sites. While supervising daily billing operations, Van conducted ongoing process improvement analyses and implemented system improvements. She oversaw troubleshooting and system upgrades to the center’s electronic health records (EHR) system, EPIC, to maximize practice management system utilization. She also developed and implemented systems to improve reporting capabilities for divisions including billing, accounts receivable, coding and collections.

Van has coding experience for risk adjustment as well as for billing and claims. She has worked as a remote HCC medical coder for Optum, a medical review coordinator for Considine & Associates, a contracted infusion and oncology medical coder for Chan Soon-Shiong Institute for Medicine, and an HCC coordinator and multi-specialty coder for Verity Medical Foundation.

In these roles, Van reviewed medical records and physician documentation to ensure coding guidelines were followed and to identify revenue improvement opportunities. Working with physicians at the Chan Soon-Shiong Institute and Verity Medical Foundation, she educated the organizations’ providers on coding systems and their impact on compliance and revenue generation. At the Indian Health Center, she leveraged this knowledge to maintain regulatory compliance and audit policies to ensure they were accurate and up to date.

Van has a certificate in medical coding, billing, and office administration from the Institute for Business and Technology and is pursuing her associate’s degree in health information and medical records technology from Santa Barbara City College. She is bilingual, speaking both English and Vietnamese.

Van enjoys spending time with her daughter, playing the occasional round of golf, and catching NFL games, Korean dramas, and Alex-Trebek-era Jeopardy reruns.
