New HMA report using VRDC data analyzes hip fracture outcomes in Dual Eligible population

In this new report, “Answering Questions Using Virtual Research Data Center (VRDC): How using Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS) Impacts Hip Fracture Outcomes“, HMA is now using Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Virtual Research Data Center (VRDC) to answer important healthcare questions. One contractual obligation for use of CMS data is the release of a publicly available research paper using the dataset, which contains all Medicare fee for service (FFS) and Medicaid FFS and managed care organization (MCO) claims. HMA used the VRDC data to examine the relationship between Long-Term Services and Supports (LTSS) and Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS) on hip fracture outcomes for people who are dually eligible for Medicare and Medicaid benefits. The analysis found that patients who receive HCBS were less likely to incur a future inpatient stay. The report and data analysis are detailed below.

VRDC Medicare and Medicaid claims data can be used to develop best practices for the healthcare system, looking at patient demographics, including eligibility/enrollment types (including dual-eligibles), race/ethnicity, age, and other critical subgroups to inform equity analyses. These data can be used longitudinally to measure the effect of interventions as well as to inform population health strategies. Driving change in healthcare delivery: HMA Spring Workshop on value-based care examines advancements in data analytics and technology

In the constantly changing healthcare environment, data analytics and technology are key tools to assist in controlling the burden of increased costs and identifying gaps in quality. As digital health tools and technology advance to include wearable devices, mobile health apps, telemedicine platforms, and other innovations, this enables the integration of digital solutions and real-time patient data. Artificial intelligence, still largely untapped, may have a significant impact as well.

Ideally better data will result in higher quality, better health outcomes, and an increase in provided value. To achieve this, effective health information technology platforms need to be interoperable and truly facilitate the exchange of patient information among providers and care coordinators. Data analytics tools and technology also must be consumer focused and focus on collecting and sharing data that is analyzable. These tools are a vital component of establishing new payment structures, allowing plans and providers to share some of the risk and the cost savings from producing better health outcomes. Identifying a core set of metrics that are patient-focused, measurable, and actionable along with optimizing data analytics tools can provide more efficient pathways to providing healthcare. Any company working in healthcare must elevate data and technology as a fundamental part of corporate strategy across all objectives.

You can explore best practices and emerging opportunities for data and technology at HMA’s 2024 Spring workshop on value-based care (VBC) March 5-6, in Chicago. Breakout discussions offer a unique forum for payers, government officials, community organizations, vendors, and providers to have an unvarnished conversation about the challenges, lessons, and opportunities in implementing value-based care. You will engage with HMA experts and peers in an intimate setting and come away with new ideas and new allies.

The Data and Technology cohort will include two small group discussions facilitated by HMA leaders Ryan Howells, Stuart Venzke, and David Lee, as well as former US Chief Technology Officer Aneesh Chopra. The sessions are designed to arrive at specific recommendations as to how stakeholders can advance their own data and technology capabilities and jointly address systemic barriers to better meet the needs of those taking risk for outcomes:

  • Making Data More Patient Centric: Opportunities in Trusted Exchange Framework and Common Agreement (TEFCA) implementation in producing and supporting FHIR APIs to create a more patient-centered data ecosystem that achieves a tangible return on investment.
  • Making Data Central to Strategy: Developing a strategic organizational technology roadmap that will support both current and future data and technology priorities

Other cohort discussions will delve into approaches to develop and manage risk-based contracting across sectors, establish effective partnerships with safety net providers and community-based organizations, and navigating changes in local market and policy conditions that are shaping value-based care adoption and innovation.

Health Management Associates Successfully Completes SOC 2 Type 2 Examination

The SOC 2 Type 2 audit was developed by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants to evaluate an organization’s information security controls over a period of time​. It assessed both the suitability of HMA’s controls and its operating effectiveness, covering the HMA organization as a whole, service offerings, resources used to deliver client work, and technical (cybersecurity) and non-technical controls (administrative strengths such as excellent training and a culture that promotes anti-fraud and ethical behaviors).

Digital innovation to be a featured topic at 2023 HMA fall conference

Advancements in digital health and data technology have made for rapid and remarkable transformation of the healthcare landscape. From wearable devices to mobile health apps to telemedicine platforms, the integration of digital solutions and patient data is disrupting every facet of healthcare – to say nothing of the AI revolution that has only just begun. Founded in 2013, Crestline Advisors supports health plans, provider organizations, and state agencies with an array of services designed to help them navigate the changing healthcare landscape. The company’s team of independent consultants has an extensive track record of developing successful RFP responses, provider networks, and business development strategies to fuel client success.

2022 Yearly Roundup: a year of successful partnerships

Reforming Colorado’s Behavioral Health System

HMA partnered with the Colorado Department of Human Services to support the planning and implementation of a new Behavioral Health Administration (BHA). HMA provided technical research and extensive stakeholder engagement, drafted models for forming and implementing the BHA, employed an extensive change management approach, and created a detailed implementation plan with ongoing support. Today the BHA is a cabinet member-led agency that collaborates across agencies and sectors to drive a comprehensive and coordinated strategic approach to behavioral health.

From Bid to Trusted Advisor

Wakely Consulting Group, an HMA Company, was engaged to support the launch of a Medicare Advantage (MA) joint venture partnership between a health plan and a provider system. Wakely was responsible for preparing and certifying MA and Medicare Part D (PD) bids, a highly complex, exacting, and iterative effort. The Wakely team quickly became a trusted advisor and go-to resource for the joint venture decision makers. The joint venture has driven significant market growth over its initial years, fueled by a competitive benefit package determined by the client product team.

Laying the Foundation for Modernizing Indiana’s Public Health System

In 2021 Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb appointed a 15-member commission to assess Indiana’s public health system and make recommendations for improvements. The Indiana Department of Health (IDOH) engaged HMA to provide extensive project management and support for six workstreams. HMA prepared a draft report summarizing public input as well as research findings and recommendations. The commission’s final report will form the basis of proposed 2023 legislation, including proposals to substantially increase public health service and funding across the state.

Multiple Clients Accepted into ACO REACH Model

In early 2022 HMA and Wakely Consulting Group, an HMA Company, assisted multiple clients with their applications to participate in the new CMS ACO REACH model. The purpose of this model is to improve quality of care for Medicare beneficiaries through better care coordination and increased engagement between providers and patients including those who are underserved. The team tailored their support depending on each client’s needs. The application selection process was highly competitive. Of the 271 applications received, CMS accepted just under 50 percent. Notably, nine out of the 10 organizations HMA and Wakely supported were accepted into the model.

Pipeline Research and Policy Recommendations to Address New Innovative Therapies

HMA, and subsidiaries The Moran Company and Leavitt Partners, were selected by a large pharmaceutical manufacturer to analyze the current pipeline of innovative therapies, examine reimbursement policies to assess long-term compatibility with the adoption of innovative therapies and novel delivery mechanisms, and make policy recommendations to address any challenges identified through the process. The project equipped the client with a holistic understanding of future potential impacts and actions to address challenges in a detailed pipeline analysis of innovative therapies.
