HMA Input, Analysis Identify California Provider Shortage

A team of HMA colleagues, including Carrie Cochran, Helen DuPlessis, Jon Freedman, Kelly Krinn, Nora Leibowitz and Ryan Mooney conducted impact assessments of recommendations developed by the California Future Health Workforce Commission.

The assessments were used to help determine which of the more than 30 proposed recommendations would be part of the Commission’s final report.

The HMA team presented the analysis process and results to the Commission. In addition, Nora Leibowitz summarized Commissioner dissents with the draft recommendations in order to synthesize outstanding issues for incorporation in the final report.

The final report indicates there is a shortage of primary care physicians, significant shortages of psychiatrists and other behavioral health workers as well as a shortage of language and ethnic concordant providers. The shortfalls are significant as these professionals are essential for addressing the needs of an increasingly diverse healthcare consumer in California.

The final report, executive summary and impact statements are published on the Commission’s website.
